This project involves a phased renovation of the town hall of the city of Ghent, whereby modern techniques are integrated with respect for the architectural and cultural-historical value of the monument.
For example, the architectural mass of the historic walls is used in its advantage to passively maintain a pleasant interior temperature. In areas where overheating can occur, top cooling was added.
The ventilation is integrated into the existing chimneys and maximized according to the available space. The air handling unit is equipped with energy recovery.
The grids are integrated in the interior and optimized in collaboration with the Heritage Service so that the impact on the monument is minimized.
The lighting is adapted to the most modern standard; all new lighting is LED and any luminaires that can be retained are provided with relighting.
The integration of new electrical boards and fire detection is being evaluated in an ongoing bigger master plan for the building.
Rainwater is reused for flushing the toilets and kitchenettes are equipped with hand basins with self-closing taps.
