Celesio is a leading international wholesale & retail company and provider of logistics and services to the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector. Every day, the company supplies pharmacies and hospitals a very wide range of pharmaceutical products. There was a need to build a new distribution center in Grimbergen to maintain timely delivery of products to their clients.
The MEP design & installation of this distribution center had to meet the two following criteria to properly preserve and store medication: Firstly, the room temperature within the entire warehouse may never drop below 15 ° C or rise above 25 ° C and secondly, the heat losses of the structure had to be kept to a minimum.
In order to both reduce the temperature fluctuations inside and minimize heating/cooling losses to the outside, a well performing building envelope was designed. An all-air system keeps the air temperature homogeneous in the distribution center. Due to the need of temperature homogeneity, the throw and induction air patterns were carefully studied between the very high storage racks. From the large airflows that accompany the all-air system, heat is continuously recovered utilizing a high-temperature plate heat exchanger.
The loading and unloading zones are physically isolated in separate smaller rooms to minimize negative impacts on the indoor climate.
To monitor and control temperatures, a building management system was installed to alert when temperature limits are exceeded.
